How much does a WordPress website actually cost in South Africa?
Most professional service websites land between R10,000 and R50,000 to launch, depending on how many pages you need and how much of the content and setup you outsource. What's included in the once-off cost?
Domain registration, your first month of hosting, a theme and any plugins, content writing and SEO setup, and developer or design time for anything custom. Each of those is priced separately in the calculator so you can see exactly where the money goes.
What's the difference between content/SEO hours and developer hours?
Content and SEO hours cover page copy, keyword research, and on-page setup, the words and structure your site needs to be found. Developer hours cover the technical build: custom layouts, booking integrations, anything beyond what a standard theme does out of the box. They’re billed at different rates because they’re different skill sets.
How many developer or content hours do I need?
It comes down to page count. Every page needs roughly 1 hour of research, 3 hours of writing, and 2 hours of implementation, 6 hours of content/SEO work per page. Custom design adds about 2 hours per page on top of that. A 5-page Essential build works out to 30 content hours and 10 design hours. An 8-page Growth build is 48 and 16. A 14-page Authority build is 84 and 28. The calculator does this math for you and lets you override it if your build is different.
Do I need a developer, or can I build this myself?
Depends on your build. A simple 5-page site on a standard theme is realistic to set up yourself with a weekend and this checklist. Custom booking systems, non-standard layouts, or specific integrations usually need developer hours. The calculator lets you set developer hours to zero and see what that saves.
Are the hourly rates fixed?
No. The calculator defaults to R700/hour for content and SEO work and R1,000/hour for developer and design work, typical South African freelance rates for this kind of work, but both are editable. If you’ve got your own quote or you’re pricing your own time differently, change the rate fields and the totals update immediately.
Why does hosting cost vary so much?
Xneelo’s plans scale with storage, mailboxes, and databases, not just traffic. A 5-page brochure site runs fine on Basic. A site with more pages, more email accounts, or higher traffic needs Standard or Advanced. The calculator defaults to a sensible plan per build size, but you can change it.
Is there a cheaper way to get a domain?
Yes, .co.za is the cheapest option at R89 a year. Extensions like .capetown, .biz, or .tv cost more and mostly make sense if they say something specific about your business or location. For most professional service firms, .co.za or .com is the right call.
Does this include ongoing content or SEO work after launch?
No. This tool prices the build and the first year of hosting and domain. Ongoing content, blog posts, and SEO maintenance are a separate, recurring cost, not included here since they depend entirely on how much you want to keep publishing.
